Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (Resurrection of the Christ Church)

This church was built by Emperor Alexander III to immortalize to memory of his father Alexander II who had been assassinated on the place where the church is now. One can say that the church is a personification of religious architecture of ancient Moscow. From the outside the walls are faced with specially prepared red bricks and richly decorated with glazed bricks panels. In the history of arts there is hardly any other example of equal dimensions: the mosaics of the church were based on original paintings of great Russian painters, 1000 m² of the facade and 6000 m² of the interiors are covered with mosaics.
